Day 61 Fruit Picking -
Back to work again today after yesterday's token day off. I havnt managed to sleep in, either due to work or just waking up early on days off, for weeks now and I felt it this morning. I was super tired when I got up at half 5 for the 6:30am start.
It was a strange, and eventful, day at work in general today. First we found out first thing this morning that the couple from New South Wales were leaving that afternoon, so it put a bit of a downer on it from the start. Then we had wierd weather - it was kind of humid and cloudy, then warmed right up and then we patchy showers this afternoon.
There were lots of tricks being played today too - Jenny (as always was the ring leader) started it all off with a joke lighter, and instead of lighting Kim's cigarette almost poker her in the face as a plastic penis popped out the end, which everyone found hilarious. Then Janet gave me a fake (but disgustingly real and sticky) dog poo, which I got a couple of the women in the shed with via strawberry trays. Finally at the end of the day we stuck a "if the van is rockin', don't come'a knockin'" sign on the NSW couples motor home!
The most eventful thing of the day was when Jim (one of the pickers) was almost bitten by a deadly snake! He was picking away as usual, and didn't see this snake in the strawberry bushes until he had almost grabbed it whilst going for a Strawberry. He proceeded to jump/scramble out his trolley shouting snake, and I don't blame him! It was only about 1.5 feet long, so Jeff managed to catch it in some Strawberry trays and carry it down to the dust road at the end.
Kim (who is petrified of snakes) was going a bit wild and had Greg on the phone, who obviously said to kill it, as realising it may result in it coming straight back again.
In the end Jeff tipped it out onto the road, and he and I knocked it off with a stick each. Having had a closer look at it once it couldn't bite anyone, it turned out to be a Rough Back, which apparently are cape able of killing some..
The rest of the day was uneventful, until the end when we took some group photos as Jeff and Brownian were leaving.
When I got home I was quite productive for once - I read up on the qualification points for a second Working Holiday VISA, of which I think I have passed, and found the document you have to fill out along with your boss as evidence.
I also rang up a local hair dresser, and have booked myself in for Sunday lunch time to get Dreadlocks! There is no going back now!
Having spoken to the women it's much more expensive than I thought, but only because I was stupid to think it would be so cheap originally. It will take over 4 hours to do, plus the stuff she needs to do it, coming to a total of $350 (when I thought it would be about $100-$200).
As usual I went to bed super tired anoint 9:30pm.
