This morning Mark, Diggor and I got up at 5:30am to go deep sea fishing with Mark (and Dan and Matt, Angela's sons). We met him in Caloundra at the power boat club (near where i go fishing at Golden Beach / Pelecan Waters), where we launched the boat and then went down Pumestone Passage, and out to sea near Bribie Island.
Despite being cold before the sun came up, it turned into a beautiful day. There was no swell and only small wind chop, so it was perfect boating conditions.
As we approached the first fishing spot, we witnessed an amazing display from a Humpback Whale - in about the 15 minutes we were watching it did just about all the signature behaviours like leaping out the water, the tail wafting above the water, and laying on its side waving a flipper. It was absolutely amazing to watch, and seeing it in real life really makes you realise quite how big they are, rather than watching it on TV.
Just as it was leaving it swam directly for our boat, as we had stopped and started fishing. It was a little unnerving for a while, until we saw it off to one side. It was about 25 feet from the boat when it came up, took a breathe of air and disappeared.
Unfortubately the days fishing wasn't quite as amazing as the whale watching. We caught a lot of 'smaller' fish, and fish for the freezer as bait, but nothing edible. Despite that it was a beautiful morning on the water, and I really enjoyed it.
Unforunately Diggor and Dan felt sea sick almost the entire time we were out there, but considering Diggor has had some sort of stomach bug for weeks, that's barely surprising. Despite that, they both caught some fish when they weren't feeling as ill.
We fished in about 4 different spots in all, but spent the most time closer to the shore, where it was more sheltered for the kids. As we headed home from the last spot, we slowly trawled a live bait behind the boat, hoping for a big Tuna or shark to take it, but unfortunately we weren't that lucky.
We eventually got back to the boating club and got the boat out the water etc by about 12:30pm, then headed off home for lunch.
In the afternoon Mark and Fenella went off to some a live music event happening at Moffat Beach to meet friends, Diggor felt really ill and went to bed all afternoon, and Cecily was at the beach with a friend. I offered to stay home and check on Diggor, so just spent the afternoon laying in the sun by the pool and reading my surfing magazine.
In the evening we were all pretty tired and everyone went to bed very early, apart from Cecily and I. I Skyped home and spoke to everyone, which was really nice as usual. I spoke to mum and dad about my travel plans too so it was good to keep them up to date. I was also spoke to Laurie, Jens and Olivia as they were at our house, so that was nice too.
