Day 53 Fruit Picking -
I started early today along with everyone else, at 6:30am, as there was lots to do. I was back out in the patch picking again today. We made good progress and Havnt got much left to do tomorrow (Saturday) morning now. However even after we have finished picking, I will probably work try and do a few hours in the shed packing too, so to earn a bit more money.
Not much was different at work today really, apart for the heat - holy moly! By the time we knocked at 3pm it was 33 degrees, and it had cooled down a little from earlier in the day. Although it was a dry heat, it didn't stop you from sweating all day long, which is pretty uncomfortable.
When I got home from work I had a shower and something to eat, then got ready to go and see the car down in Caloundra. I got the low down from Fenella so I knew what to expect, then put my surfboard bag and a big single sponge mattress in the back of the car.
When I got to the garage I met Russell, who Fenella was right about - he was a really nice genuine guy. After a quick chat I took the car for a test drive around the block (completely by myself?!). It was strange being the one to do it all for the first time, as with cars at home dad always did it all. I felt a little bit out of my depth, but with dads pointers for things to look for, it went fine.
It seems to drive fine, with no pulling off to the side of strange noises etc. I did a couple of sharp stops and put though all the gears etc, and couldn't find anything wrong. Then I stopped and checked the whole thing over, underneath, tyres, electrics and anything else I could think of - again all was well.
When I got back after again chatting to some of the guys working there, I played around with fitting stuff in there. It definitely isn't the biggest estate in the world, but I fitted everything in, and I could sort of visualise how I could fit any other stuff in there too, like bags etc. One thing it did make me realise though, was that if I am to travel with someone else, We will more than likely need to get a small tent, as it will be a bit cramped for 2 people all the time...assuming I find someone to travel with!
In the end having checked over everything, and found out as much as possible from Russell (not only about the car but insurance etc too), we bartered a bit and settled on $2250. For everything that is is included, e.g. REGO, service and any new bits needed (like windscreen wipers) and importantly 6 months warrantee, I am happy with it. They will do all the servicing and paper work etc, and all being well I will have it late next week! Bough my first car by myself, and it's on the other side of the world..crazy!
Only thing I need to do is go to the Transport Agency with all my documents and get a Queensland driving liscense (simply a case of paper work), as it is needed to OWN a car, but not needed to drive someone else's.
When I got home I chatted to Mark and Fenella about it, who were obviously happy for me. I am super lucky to be able to use their family friend contacts!
Later as usual I just messed about on the Internet and watched TV really. Only eventful thing was that it rained...for the 1st time in about 2 months! It absolutely hammered it down quickly, then disapeared. It is a humid and warm evening though, with all the frogs and insects croaking outside!
