Today I woke up about 8:30am despite it being a weekend. I was really tired last night, so I'm a bit annoyed I didn't sleep for longer.
I faffed about looking at surf reports and having breakfast for ages, then rang Jen (from work) about 10:30am to make sure I was still going camping/fishing with them. It was all on, despite a few people bailing out and a dodgey weather forecast, so I met her and her partner at her house about 11:30am.
We went off to the 'secret spot' out in the Bush about 20 minutes drive from their house (a place called Coochin
Creek) , and were there and set up about 12:30pm. The spot really was in the middle of nowhere - we just found a small sandy clearing next to the creek and pitched up camp. One of the amazing things about Oz is you can be out in the complete wilderness with no one around in just 15 minutes..
Having set up camp etc we fished and drank (Aussies can't go fishing without copious amounts of beer) all afternoon till about 5pm, when the light started to go and we had dinner (standard hot dogs on the camp fire!).
Unfortunately despite getting loads of bites we didn't catch anything, but it was good fun sitting in the sun and relaxing all the same..
After eating as it was completely pitch black and we couldn't fish any more, so we just set up the night rods and cast out for the night.
We then stoked up the fire and made ourselves comfortable for an evening drinking and story telling.
Jen's partener is ex-military so really knows his stuff about going out and living in the bush. One of the most memorable stories was about a fishing trip with his son - Simularly to us they camped next to the creek, but also set a SHARK line over night! In the morning they landed a Bull Shark out the creek onto the bank.. As you do!
They also told me about Gold Mining in the area. The 2 of them have gone off for weekends Gold Mining and come back with $6K to split between a group of 8/10 people! They are definately a good contact to have, especially for when the strawberry season is over..
Despite some rain it was a brilliant evening next to the fire just drinking and chatting away.
I have no idea what time we went to bed, but it probably wasn't even that late as it gets dark so early..
