The lady who Miss Shi had bought fruit from at the weekend waved to me at the bus stop, but I didn't go over to her stall to be friendly. Besides our language-barrier, her stall is between some buildings and my bus stop, and today so were some inflatables and a whole lot of canons aimed at the road just beyond the bus stop.I was waiting for the bus and hoping it would arrive very soon. But the music started and I knew what was coming!
When someone gets married they put up big inflatables and launch the loudest fireworks they can (in the daytime) for good luck.I think they believe there is some correlation between the louder the bang, the more bad luck it will scare away.So anyway, all these canons start launching one-by-one and it was completely deafening.People began diving for cover under the bus stop where I am stood, then looked just as afraid that they got too close to the Laowai girl. The canon-propelled fireworks were so powerful I could feel each blast make my hair move! The traffic on the road in front of me stopped in both directions as they did not want to be hit by the fireworks and debris.Another thing with these fireworks is that they scatter something like bright red fluff/confetti all over the place. My ears were ringing and I was covered in red fluff, just what I need!
As I got back to my apartment, still a little shaken from being in the line of fire from the mad firework display, a little girl was waiting for her mum outside the apartment building. She was holding a couple of oranges. When her mum finished locking up the electricity bike, the girl said something to her in Chinese.I smiled as I walked past and the girl said "orange!" so I said it back to her. Then she came up to me and handed me one of the oranges.I looked at her mum and she was smiling, so I took the orange and said thank you.I am getting a bit worried about all these Chinese people giving me fruit… Maybe it is sub-conscious suspicions from watching Snow White as a child!Well I had a bad cough which started today so really I was grateful of the orange for some vit C.
