I looked out of the window and the rain had stopped at last. At least on our yard it looked like the flood had subsided out there.Town had been flooded worse than the yard yesterday though so I got a taxi to work in case there were any problems with the buses.Luckily the taxi fare is the equivalent of about 90pence at home, but it's still not a good habit to be in when a bus only costs the equivalent of about 10pence!
Because the rain had stopped I had to do good morning at the gate.A few of the teachers were with me and we stood in lines either side of the gate, waving at the kids and saying good morning. One boy ran through the middle of us waving first at one side, then at the other, he made me think of a little game show host running through the audience and waving side to side.
I've found that if I start my lesson with several rounds of 'walking walking' not only does it get the children into English mode; it also helps to wake me up!All that hopping and running on the spot is good exercise! In one of my lessons, I drilled some words then turned my back to the class to put the magnets on the board ready for the game I had been teaching them.(I put the flashcards on the board and then get the children to take turns coming up, I say a word and they have to hit the correct flashcard to earn a sticker)As I turned back to face the class, I discovered most of the children in the class already had their hands up to take part even though I hadn't announce the game yet.I thought it was really sweet that they were this keen already.I also decided to teach them the words 'big' and 'small' so l I explained it and then got them standing up as big as they could and then crouching down being small. They loved it!The classroom assistant also joined in to set a good example so we were all bouncing around being big and small and it was fun.
At lunch time I had to meet Echo to go to a market which was about half an hour away by bus. When we got there I met her mum, dad and uncle who run a shop there, but none of them spoke English.Echo had been asked to help me buy the bedding on behalf of Teacher Shi, so we went to a market and her mum did the haggling.I was not given a lot of scope with the bedding I could pick from and it was impossible to get anything matching.I've ended up with a bright pink pillowcase, a green and purple stripy sheet and a duvet with apples on in an assortment of colours. But at least it should be warmer than just the sheet I have been sleeping on.The beds here are like hard wooden boards, not like the mattresses at home, so it will be nice to put the duvet under the sheet for a little more comfort. I had some lunch with Echo then we took the half an hour bus journey back in time for afternoon classes.I left the bedding at her school and in the evening she and a friend used their electric bicycles to drive the large bags of bedding to our apartment.
