The conversations went on so long that Ashley and I didn't get taxi until after 6am.We didn't even go back to my apartment, we went straight for breakfast!I started to see flashing lights as though I might be getting a migraine, but after something resembling couscous soup the lights went away and luckily a headache did not develop.Ashley came back to the apartment to grab his backpack and then went off to the bus station for the next part of his journey.I went to bed.
Miss Wang text me asking if I would like to go to the university with her because there are some young children in her sister's school who may like a personal tutor.I was feeling tired and ill but I thought it would be a good idea to go.I was wearing a linen skirt and long sleeved t-shirt.The weather had got a bit colder but I didn't think it was cold enough yet for a coat.Miss Wang gasped when she saw me; she was all dressed up for winter! We got the bus to the university and there is a little school in the grounds I had never noticed before.Miss Wang's sister was really friendly. We sat in a room waiting for a class to finish and then during the break they took me into the class.
The class teacher asked me to introduce myself.I said a few things and then the kids (they were older than the ones at my schools, about 10 years old) all started to ask me questions. Then the class teacher asked me to play games.I had not been expecting this so I was completely unprepared.I was too tired to be feeling very inspired!I couldn't even use the games from kindergarten as these kids were too old.Thinking on the spot I explained the rules of hangman and played: Class V Teacher. The class won! They got really excited by the game, but then it was the end of their break.I went back to the other room with Miss Wang and her sister. Then during the next break I was asked to play more games.Argh I just wanted to go to sleep and not keep thinking of games to amuse 10 year olds! This time I played a version of noughts and crosses with half the class competing against the other, and they mark in the grid by thinking of a word from a category I chose. This seemed to go well considering I'd made it up on the spot! Then the kids asked if I would come outside and play.I went with them and stood there in the cold while they crowded around asking questions. One little girl said I was beautiful and asked if she could kiss me (on the cheek). It was really cold so we all went back inside and I was asked to play another game.I got them playing animal charades and one of them was 'snake' and the boy dived on the floor and started wriggling around, it was really funny.
I have to apologise to my mum in advance of the next couple of paragraphs.Sorry mum, I did something I NEVER EVER wanted to do or thought I would do.After the children left, the teacher invited me to supper.I thought I ought to say yes as it would be really good if I could secure some private work.By this time it had got late and the buses stop running.I assumed we would be getting a taxi.I was told to follow Miss Wang's sister and went down a lane.I started to worry. She disappeared and reappeared… with a motorbike.I told her I had never been on a motorbike before and it would be too dangerous.I said I was not scared of her driving, but I was afraid that I am so clumsy and I might fall off.She told me there is nothing to be scared about and started it up.I was still protesting but she started moving down the lane.
Oh my god.I can't believe I did it, but I really had no choice.I rolled up my skirt to my knees (completely inappropriate for motorcycling in any country, let alone China!) and I climbed on behind her.She yelled "hug me" so I scooted forward and wrapped my arms around her.And off we went, neither of us wearing a helmet. No jacket or gloves, a t-shirt and virtually bare legs in the cold night.I pushed my face into her back, closed my eyes, and tried to imagine I was somewhere else. When we finally stopped my legs were so cold I wasn't sure I would be able to move them.
We had a nice dinner which included some strange soup, some noodles, weird sweet crispy rolls and some vegetables. They were really considerate and only ordered vegetarian food but I'm not quite sure what any of it was. They had also brought a bottle of wine, as if I needed any more alcohol after the last two nights; but I had bit of red wine. Then it was time to get back on the motorbike. This time Miss Wang had to get on the motorbike too.I'm not sure if it was the wine, or just the relief at being nearly home, but the second journey on the bike was a little more enjoyable.I even opened my eyes for a few seconds! But then she started talking and the moment was gone "I love to motorcycle" she said as we drove along passing all the cars stuck in traffic "I love the wind in my face" she said, looking back over her shoulder at me "I just love going faster and faster and faster".Wonderful, I thought to myself, not only is my first ever motorcycle experience without safety gear, on scary Chinese roads, wearing a skirt, sat between two sisters… but the driver is also a speed demoness!
