As I was walking along the main road to get to Flower Garden, a Chinese man slowed his car to a crawl alongside me as I walked.I was a little worried but I just kept walking. He wound down his window and starting speaking to me in Chinese.I tried to tell him I don't understand. Then I could recognise the words he asked me where I am from so I told him I'm English.Because I had spoken a few words he continued trying to speak to me in Chinese.I was still walking and he was still driving slowly beside me.I told him I'm a teacher and pointed towards where the school is and then he said goodbye and drove away.It was very weird!
I was invited to watch a demo class in the afternoon, so I went back to Genius Baby for lunch then had time to quickly check my emails. Before I left England, my friend Rob introduced me to his friend Ashley on Facebook. This afternoon I'd had an email from Ashley saying he is not too far from Liaocheng so could he come to stay tomorrow?I had never met him, but I said yes anyway.I did warn him that Liaocheng is boring and also that I haven't got a hot shower. Then I went back to Flower Garden to watch the demo class. Most of the English lessons at the school are taught by Chinese teachers who have learnt English as a second language. The teacher who they consider the best at the school was showing the other Chinese teachers how she teaches her classes. It turned out I was invited as a guest because they want me to comment on what was good and what was bad about her lesson. I don't feel comfortable doing this.Although her class was interesting, I have big issues with Chinese teachers teaching English. The pronunciation is just all wrong and some of the meanings of songs and rhymes to help them learn have been lost along the way (Chinese whispers style).I know these issues are not going to be solved by my comments at one school in China, so I think it will be better if I keep them to myself.
I went to the supermarket and while I stopped to look at something, someone touched me on the arm.I looked up and a lady was smiling at me.It was the lady who seems to do a lot of cleaning and general help around the Genius Baby Kindergarten. She also works at the supermarket; she must just spend most her life working.I thought it was nice that she wanted to say Hello.
I was still feeling ill so on the way home I went to the pharmacy to get some paracetamol. They sell it in packs of two in clear plastic wrapping, so I picked up a bunch of these and was approached by the pharmacist. She started saying "No.No. No" and I didn't know what to do.I really needed these paracetamol for my sore throat, but how can I argue when I don't speak Chinese?!So rather childishly I said "Yes.Yes.Yes".She looked horrified "No.No.No".So I said "Why?" and she didn't understand.Another assistant came over and took them from me.Then the original pharmacist started hitting herself on the head, really hard.I was so confused I considered giving up but I really needed these paracetamol and I don't like to give up easily.I turned to the assistant who was now holding the bunch of tablets and pointed to my throat. Then she cut some of the packets and let me buy a few.I will never know quite what was going on there.I don't know if it was just the quantity I had picked up was too high. Or maybe the pharmacist was hitting herself on the head to ask if my problem was a headache.Or perhaps they sold them to me when they shouldn't have, just to make me go away.
