I slept in until 9:30am which by home standards is early for a Saturday, but after the week of early starts I'd had it felt quite late.I went to the supermarket with Jen and got a Chinese equivalent of a pick & mix.On the way back to the apartment we got some food from a street stall. It was like a fresh pitta filled with salad and it was really nice. Then we got Bus 5 to the local park, we sat by the lake and watched the children playing around with pedalo boats. We also saw some old people doing Tai Chi under the trees. After a while we got the bus back home and went to the Internet café.
As I was typing away a Chinese boy sat next to me started trying to talk to me but I didn't understand. He started typing on his computer on an online translator and I used an online translator on my computer to respond. He asked me why I was in China (I said I'm a teacher) and why I can't speak Chinese (I said I've only been here 2 weeks). He put his headphones on my head and made me listen to Lady Gaga so I explained to him what is meant by the expression 'Poker Face'.Then the conversation turned weirder because he showed me a picture of Michael Jackson and said he is 'finished' then he put the word Halloween on screen so I showed him some pictures of pumpkins etc. online and explained it's when kids ask for sweets.I'm not sure what he interpreted from the pictures because the next thing he asked was whether I believe in Jesus Christ or Zombies!! I told him I have no religion at all and then thankfully my hour was up so I said goodbye.
We then got Bus 3 into town and met Ruth.We went to a fast food diner where the food is Chinese and you pick what you want. The staff got very excited trying to serve us but it meant as usual everything was chaotic and took about 10 times longer than it should.I showed them a translation for spicy tofu and rice and waited at the table for it to arrive. When it arrived I thought it looked a little bit like meat mixed in with the tofu so I got Jen to try it, she said it was beef.So once again dinner for me was a bowl of boiled rice mixed up with Soy sauce. It was quite nice though and I even figured out how to go back up to the counter and order us all a beer!
We went to the mall which has an arcade on the top floor and had a ride on the bumper cars. The sight of three English girls driving round the track bumping into all the Chinese boys and laughing out loud drew quite a crowd, and after all that excitement we sat down for some Ice cream.
We found a KTV which had a disco and went to sit inside, there were strange singers on stage, and the seating area was virtually empty. We decided to buy a beer and went back outside of the disco, but the led us back in to show us how the bar works. You have to order the drink from one counter, get a ticket and then take that to another counter to collect the beer.Suddenly the music turned loud and dancy and the dance floor was full of people… where had they all come from?!?!I got on the dance floor with Jen and we discovered that it was a bouncy dance floor. It was incredibly strange and if you bounced just right you could actually take off the ground (not forgetting to hold on tight to the bottle of beer) and it was a great laugh even if we were the only girls drinking alcohol.
The music didn't go on for very long and then a man got on the stage and did a lot of talking. We thought maybe he was like a comedian but nobody was laughing. Then he jumped about on the stage and on the crowd and in total he did 2 shots and downed 2 beers to the audience. We have no idea what it all meant and decided to leave.
We got a pedi-cab and actually managed to communicate that he needed him to make 2 stops.Jen and I got off first and when we got to the apartment; neither of us could open the front door so we had to phone Miss Wang to let us in.I felt terrible for waking her, but I'm not certain whether or not she locked us out on purpose.
