The rain had not stopped since yesterday and the puddles were becoming gigantic. When I arrived at school I had to stand under the shelter by the front door and say "good morning" to every child who walked in.It is very difficult to be chirpy at 7:30 in the rain!During the morning I gave 3 classes. The children remembered my games and were very enthusiastic.
Zhen Yang set her computer up in the classroom so we could use the internet to translate things to each other. She wanted me to stay for lunch so we could talk some more.I asked her if it would be suitable for vegetarians and she said the school has a meat dish and vegetarian dish each day.Today's dish, in the words of Zhen Yang was- the tomato fries the egg.It was actually really nice I just had to tell myself I hadn't seen the children putting their fingers in the bowls before it was served. There was one little boy in the room who was sobbing and sobbing, he took my hand and kept repeating something but I didn't understand him.I picked him up to give him a cuddle and his clothes were wet with sweat he was in such a state.I tried to ask someone what was wrong with him and she said something about home, so I think he was just crying to go home. After the children have eaten they go to sleep on these tiny little wooden beds that get put down on the floor in the classroom.I was then able to chat to Zhen Yang some more, she was really nice and said the children like me and the staff like me.She said she hopes that as well as colleagues we become good friends.
At the end of school I walked out into the street, to discover I couldn't get across road.Because it had been raining solidly for 2 days the town was flooded. The road was gridlocked so I was going to have to find a different bus route to get home. The flooding was worse on the road so I walked down the pavement to try to find somewhere shallower to cross over. Then the pavement ran out so I walked in the other direction back towards the school.I could feel panic starting to rise as I wondered if I was going to make it home, but I got a grip and gave into the fact I was going to have to jump in.I took off my shoes, and waded across the street in my nice work clothes.I'd picked a spot near two traffic police, in the hope that if I fell in they may help me.Well I didn't fall in, but my trousers were soaked in seconds all the way from my ankles up to my waist-band, although the water was just up to my knees.I tried not to think about all the other things besides water and mud that were probably floating around in there.
Once I got across the road to the pavement on the other side I headed in the direction of the other bus I thought I may be able to get.I had put on my waterproof jacket but soon discovered it is not actually waterproof and I was soaked through and my jaw was shivering in that ridiculous uncontrollable way.I finally made it to a different bus stop and didn't actually have to wait too long for a bus.I started to warm up a bit on the bus and all I could think about was having a hot shower. When I got off the bus the wind took my breath away as it chilled the wet clothes I had been sat in.I went to the supermarket and bought a kettle and a 'chocolate milk tea' which was the closest thing to hot chocolate that I could find.I also bought a mop because the state I was in would soak the floor within seconds of walking through the door.
Our yard had flooded too, so I waded through trying to hold the kettle, mop and my other shopping above my head to stop it going in the flood water and getting ruined.Eventually I got home, I boiled the kettle, and mixed it in the bucket with some cold water from the shower, and poured it over myself. Then I put on my pyjamas and had the hot chocolate which was much nicer than I expected.I went to bed trying not to worry about how to get to work in the morning.
