The vocabulary I was teaching in Genius Baby today was to do with movement (walk, run, jump, crawl) and the kids were getting bored so I got them to act out each action and make lots of noise saying the correct words. When it came to 'crawl' they all dived off of their chairs and into a big heap on their hands and knees, screeching '"crawl, crawl, crawl".I don't know what it was about the sight of all these kids messing around but I caught the eye of the assistant and neither of us could help ourselves laughing. It took us a while to get them all back to their seats because we were laughing too much.
I was sat out in the corridor waiting for one of my lessons to start.A teacher was using the play equipment with a small group of children then she went into a classroom and one of the kids hurt himself. He looked around for her and when he couldn't find her he climbed onto my lap, snuggled right in and wept.I thought it was so sweet I hugged him back and then the teacher appeared and looked a bit surprised that he had gone to me for comfort, I just hope she didn't think it was me that made him cry!
I met Lilly to go shopping and then Ruth joined us as well.We went to the indoor market again and Lilly helped me bargain for a winter coat (I deliberately chose bright red- they stare at me anyway, this will give them something to really stare at!) some pyjamas, thermal under-clothes and a dress.I had to go back to school so I thanked Lilly for her help and said "We should meet again soon!" not realising that it would be taken literally and she said "OK When?" which stumped me a bit because I was just being polite!I suggested maybe the following week and then went to get my bus.
I noticed on the label of my new coat, the care instructions state the following: "Avoid using the detergent with chloride. Otherwise youll have to answer for the damage caused by careless ness".This amused me.
After my classes I went to meet Ruth at her college to go along to her English Corner.I wanted to see how an English Corner works as my students are too young. It's basically where the class gets together after their structured lessons, to talk in a more casual forum and practice their English. The teacher can lead the discussion but it's not supposed to be as formal as a lesson. The students were really excited to have someone new to talk to.They were taking my photo and asking me lots of questions about my experiences in China and anywhere else I have travelled. After listing all the countries I have visited, one girl told me she admires me!They were interested to know I am not actually a teacher in England. After explaining my job in Project Management, I then asked about their future aspirations. One girl said she wants to be an 'office lady' and one of the girls said she wants to get married and have a baby. It was really interesting to speak to students who already have a good grasp of English.I find my students very cute but they are too young to have a conversation with.
