Today was very similar to yesterday in that we learnt some styles in the morning, then had a quickfire round of doing different styles in the afternoon.
This morning was based on period hairstyles, but done in a modern way. One of them was supposed to be based on some woman called Janelle Monae...? (http://www.sweetslyrics.com/images/img_gal/6905_up-monae_lrg.jpg) I've only just googled her, and now I can understand a bit more what we were aiming for. Unfortunately, Marcel hadn't heard of her either, and so her name changed every 10 seconds (literally) to Simone, Chanel, Chantelle, Sharon I think at one point, and every other name that wasn't Janelle. Still, I managed again to copy what everyone else was doing, and kind of got it right.
Having showed him the sketch yesterday, and deciding I was going to do a pompadour on what ever model I get, regardless of their hair type (I'm trying to keep it easy for myself), we had to practice the 'do' we were going to do on Friday. I've got something in mind now, and will just wing it if it goes pear-shaped. I spoke to a previous graduate after and she said it's mainly focussed on the make-up anyway. I was also told that if our models moan or act up, ignore anything they say and do, as it's our shoot and they're just the victims, sorry, guinea pigs, I mean models... the last one.
The afternoon involved a load of quickfire hair-doing, going back over what we'd done today, and also yesterday. None of mine ended particularly neat, especially in comparison to everyone else's, but Marcel seemed happy, so I was too.
Marcel's a really nice, and extremely helpful, tutor. He constantly repeats himself, which sometimes is rather amusing, but makes it easier to remember the stuff we have to do. It's like each hairstyle is a different song on repeat, but there's never a verse in any of them. It's all chorus. Repeated... I've started writing an album based on it. Some of the lyrics are here.
- "Over, and over, and take from the side..."
- "Take it down, and brush her out..."
- "Over and under, and over and under, and over and under..."
- "Take from the sides, tie a knot..."
...and there's loads more. It's actually incredibly useful, and has made it much easier to learn each style...
There was a brief critique at the end to discuss what we've learnt, which for me, is funkloads, and I stuck around at the end to set up Doris for tomorrow (I wasn't taking her home, although apparently, it's mandatory tomorrow night, as I'll need to wash her hair before returning her. Sad times) We were also told we need to come in tomorrow as though we were professional make-up artists, meaning black tops (with minimal expletives on), possibly black legwear, and with make-up done, looking presentable. I don't think the last one applies to me, but I'll do my best.
I fancied checking out 'Contagion' tonight, so headed back up to The Grove Farmer's Market. I got there with enough time to eat before the film started, and had some great fish and chips in some french style bistro place. Although the chips (fries) were very crunchy, and every time i tried stabbing them with my fork, they split and pinged off the table. There was quite a mess, so I just used my fingers. Nice bit of battered sole though.
As for 'Contagion', I'd heard some mixed reviews, and I'm still not entirely sure if I liked it or not. I think it tried using it's large cast of big names to outweigh the poor storyline. I've seen this type of apocalyptic/disease type film done much better. 'Outbreak' for instance? The apocalyptic 'everyone's-getting-ill-and-soon-most-people-will-die-apart-from-a-few-lucky-survivors' element, was similar to 'Threads', which I thought was done in a much better way, and that had no names… AND it was set in Sheffield!! I'd probably watch it again, but I'm not fussed if I don't.
Oh, and why were there no zombies…?!? Why?
