Today proved to be much more exciting than previous days. The class started once again with a demonstration, this time with a full-on, over-the-top, avant-garde, haute couture look. This was just to show us what we can potentially do if working on a high fashion shoot, or other runway/gala/catwalk type events. It's probably not something I'm likely to pursue as a career, but it's all been good to learn some completely new stuff. A lot of girls have applied make-up before, (being that they are girls and that's what they usually do in their spare time - right?) but they've also learnt more than they'd expected, so I don't feel as amateur now. It's quite nice to be good at something you don't necessarily enjoy.
I got to apply my make-up first, based on the sketch I did last night, to Violet's face (who's originally from Portsmouth) and was again pleased with the outcome. I've enjoyed working this week much more than I did last week on the period stuff. Maybe I've just been having a good week. As it was an exam, everything had to be checked thoroughly and graded by Mireille, before we could take photos of our work. Having checked her over, there were a few minor criticisms, but she was happy for me to take photos after a few slight adjustments/additions. I got an A minus which I'm more than happy with. I think it's my highest grade so far. I was also told that I had the best sketch of the class as I was the only one to annotate it. Get in.
There was a quick written test after lunch, which I think I did ok on, though I'd forgotten a few things from right back at the start. I'm not sure how well I did. I handed in my paper and waited for Violet to get ready to do her make-up on me. It was during this waiting period that Mireille asked me what I want to do in the future with my new make-up knowledge, as she said that in the past ten or so years of her working there, I'm one of only two men to be any good at the beauty make-up stuff; the other one was was a guy who recently worked on the film "The Way Back" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1023114), which apparently received Oscar nominations this year. So, who knows…
Violet had her go this afternoon, and had decided on a Mauri-esque tribal make-up, purely because I'm not a woman, and it'd look daft on me. You may have noticed this from previous photos of me looking a lot like a tranny. A really bad one. The design she had was very cool, and as you can see from the photo, it's a blend of tribal and cybergoth. It could perhaps be a new look for me. I think the jacket finishes the look off nicely.
Rushed home to remove my new tribal 'tattoo', which took forever due to it being done in gel eyeliner, and I think I still went out with a small amount of guy liner on. My eyes were stinging at this point so i didn't care. Besides, Liam had managed to get me on the guest list to the Asesino/Cattle Decapitation show at the Whisky-A-Go-Go tonight, and needed to get a move on. Score.
Unfortunately, I missed the bus connection and after waiting 45 mins for the next one, chose to start walking in the general direction of the venue. This would prove to take about another 45 mins. And the last 10 mins is uphill. Very uphill. I eventually made it, thinking that I'd now missed most of the support bands, but it turned out there were still 3 more before the main two bands were on. All 3 were local LA acts. Black Oilwere a bit like new Soulfly, and this is probably because most of the members are Brazilian. They were alright though. Next up were Black Empathy, a nice thrashy outfit similar in style to Testament. Managed to get a demo which is pretty cool. Letum Ascensus were a good local death metal band, much more in keeping with the other acts. Cattle Decapitation were amazing, particularly the drumming, and then Asesino were incredible. It was Dino's birthday too, so it was a good laugh.
After the show it all gets a bit hazy. I think some old Irish woman tried coming on to me saying she'd lost her mates, and offered to buy me a beer. Normally I wouldn't turn down the offer of a beer, but I think she was a bit mental, so I rapidly moved closer to the bus stop, out of her sight. Whilst waiting for the second bus, I realised it had now gone 2am and that Subway would be closed, so I ran over to McDonald's to get something before the second bus arrived. It was 24 hour, but apparently this only applied to the drive-thru, so after queueing up in between cars in the drive-thru queue, trying to ask for a Bic Mac Meal and simply being ignored, I returned to the bus stop, just in time for my bus.
I then remembered there's another McDonald's at the stop I get off at, and this was still open, so I managed to get my meal after all, though in hindsight, it was probably a bad idea.
