I was slightly woozy this morning, but woke up early to catch Soccer Saturday. I'd completely forgotten it was Euro qualifiers, so ended up watching some of the Scotland v Czech Republic game, obviously hoping that the Czech's would win. Shame it was a draw.
I watched a few things on my laptop whilst planning my day out. I'd heard about a 'Museum of Death' (www.museumofdeath.net), and it was quite near to a few other things I wanted to see, so this was the first intended stop. The place was full of 'memorabilia' related to deaths, murders, cults etc. with everything laid out in specific rooms. As I began the tour through the curtain, I saw a beagle laying perfectly still right in front of me. I had to stare for ages to see if it was real or not, as I thought it might have been some 'quirky' thing the owners had put there. It was a real dog.
There's loads of items in this place. I'll just list things in order I think I saw them. Letters from Richard Ramirez, a death row inmates prison uniform he was electrocuted in, funeral cloths from different religions and cultures, a video on embalming, Henri Landru's preserved head in a glass case, various animal skulls, pictures taken by a couple of them both butchering her ex-boyfriend (nasty), photos of car accidents, the promotional video from the Heavens Gate cult where 39 people committed suicide (as well as the clothes they wore, beds they were found in, and other items discovered in the house), a Charles Manson dedicated area with videos and photos, a room on celebrity deaths and murders including a cabinet filled with OJ Simpson trial memorabilia, a GG Allin section, Dr. Kervorkian's artwork, some Vincent Price children's games (much like the Easter Eggs one in the Superbowl episode of The Simpsons), a load of Hitler type stuff, a room on cannibalism and Jeffrey Dahmer, a taxidermy section filled with different types of stuffed animals, and this all ended with the Traces of Death film on repeat in a ceremonial looking room, with a stuffed pig and iguana, that'd been the owner's pets when they were alive. Overall, it was extremely fascinating, and strongly recommend you make a visit if you're out here. It strictly prohibits photography hence the lack of pictures, although it's definitely not for everyone.*
After a chat with the owners about local venues and bars, as well as music, I needed feeding. Fortunately, the blood, guts and limbs hadn't put me off food. As I was walking past the Blue Boar, I stopped in for a quick beer where they were showing the NFL game between Colorado and Hawaii. It was clear most of the crowd were Colorado fans, as this was chanted continuously. I'd picked up a copy of LA weekly (a listings paper) and started saving dates to my calendar of upcoming shows. There's quite a few next weekend, so I might go to one or two. I'd also seen an advert for a club night just round the corner, so decided I'd probably check that out later too.
I'd heard of an English pub called the Cat & Fiddle (www.thecatandfiddle.com) which was meant to be great, so after briefly stopping into Amoeba Music (a huge independent music store) I went for Bangers and Mash and a pint of Boddington's. It was genuinely an English pub. The original owner was Kim Gardner who used to play bass in The Birds before he died ten years ago. His daughters now run it, and another is a session musician for 'Pink'… Yeah, I've done my research.
Victor came out in need of a beer or two, so we headed to the 'Dragonfly' for this club night (http://www.evilclubempire.com/news-detail-01.html). It was an EBM/Industrial/goth night. Plenty of unhappy people dressed in black. It was actually OK, and even after Victor left, I stayed for a few more beers. Some of the girls were quite hot. I was far too drunk to do anything about this though. I even bumped into Ben from last night and we had a lengthy discussion about music. Another one.
Managed to bus it home without difficulty and set about sleeping the upcoming hangover.
*I couldn't leave without purchasing a shirt (apparently designed by the guy from 'Watain') and Museum of Death shot glass.
