Wow, what an amazing afternoon of tennis!
With the tie finely balanced at one apiece, the doubles was crucial. The atmosphere was electric as Andy and Jamie Murray took on Lleyton Hewitt and Sam Groth.
The Australians edged a close first set to take the initiative, but the British pegged them back to level the match at a set all.
Australia regained the momentum as they broke early in the third set to build a 3-0 lead. However, from 4-1 the Murrays won 5 consecutive games to take a 2 sets to 1 lead.
The fourth set was a roller coaster as the Aussies broke for a 2-0 lead only for the British to immediately break back. Then at 5-4 the British pair had to save three set points from 0-40, followed by breaking the Aussies again to serve for the match at 6-5. Just 2 points away from victory, it was the turn of the Aussies to fight back and force a tie break, which they won to take us into a fifth and final set.
The British pair started well, opening up a lead of 3-0, but nothing about this match was straightforward and it was soon level at 3-3. Then, with Groth serving at 4-5, The end finally came on the second match point.
Throughout the whole match, which was just a few minutes shy of 4 hours, the support from both camps was amazing. Is there any other sport where you experience moments of deafening noise followed a second or two later by total silence?
Let's hope the British can complete the job tomorrow.
