This weekend I attended both the Semi-Finals and Finals of the Aegon Classic at The Priory Club in Edgbaston. There was a bit of rain on Sunday, but fortunately it didn't interrupt the play.
On Saturday, the Semi-Finals took place, starting with an all Czech affair as Petra Kvitova took on Luci Safarova. Unfortunately, afetr Kvitova took the first set, Safarova had to retire injured. With Wimbledon just round the corner, a player can't risk making an injury worse.
Next up was Spain's Garbine Muguruza against Australia's Ashleigh Barty. After a closely fought contest, Barty caused an upset by beating Muguruza.
In the doubles semi-final, Chan (Taipei) and Zhang (China) took on and beat the American pairing of Atawo and McHale. The second semi-final, involving Safarova, was cancelled due to her retirement.
In the Singles Final on Sunday, Kvitova triumphed over Barty to claim the title in only her second tournament after coming back from injury caused by a knife attack in her home.
In the Doubles Final, Australian pair Ashleigh Barty and Casey Dellacqua beat Chan and Zhang. Dellacqua was then joined by her young son for the on court celebrations!
