The first day of my Arran Adventure was dry and sunny.
After a brief stroll through Lamlash with beautiful views across the bay to Holy Island, we took the roof down and drove across the island to the King's Cave car park. From there the walk went through a forest and down to the beach.
Here there are a number of caves to explore but the King's Cave is easily spotted due to the metal gate at the entrance, though it is usually left open, and I'm glad to report that it was indeed open. The cave is so named because it is one of several locations in which Robert the Bruce is said to have had his famous encounter with a spider. There are signs that the caves have been occupied for as long as humans have been on the island, including some paintings and carvings.
Next on the agenda were the standing stones of Machrie Moor. The area contains a number of cairns and standing stones, as well as stunning views.
Less than a mile up the road we stopped at the Machrie Tearoom. Here I tucked into a cheese and ham toastie, hot chocolate and a piece of Rocky Road.
Fully sated I headed up the coast to Lochranza Castle, a ruined Tower House on the banks of Lochranza.
On the way back to base we stopped in the island's main town, Brodick. Here I purchased a sandwich for tea from the Co-Op.
Today we drove a grand total of 53 miles.
