Today was fairly overcast. Nevertheless, we headed for Newton-by-the-Sea, where we intended to stroll along the sandy beach to Dunstanburgh Castle. However, it being Bank Holiday weekend, it was rather busy and there was nowhere to park. Instead, we decided to head for Craster.
On route, we stopped at The Grays Inn in Embleton for a lovely Sunday roast lunch, taking the opportunity to sample Doddington's ice cream - locally made and very creamy and lush.
We were lucky to find a spot in which to park in Craster and proceeded to walk north to Dunstanburgh Castle above the rocky beach. Shrouded in mist, the ruins of the castle looked romantic and mysterious.
We then decided to go inland, into Northumberland National Park for a drive into the Cheviot Hills. The sun decided to join us to admire the spectacular scenery, and as the MOD land deep into the range was open, we were able to complete a circuit. We also opted to have a picnic in the hills. A lovely end to the day.
