It was a typical night in NW Wales as the wind howled and the rain lashed down, but we were as snug as a bug in a rug. The stormy weather continued throughout breakfast, and it seemed there was no let up in sight. Nevertheless, the Met Office website promised that relief was just an hour away, so I let my Godson continue to play on his iPad while I made sure we were all packed up before indulging in a bit of reading.
When I judged the time was right to leave, despite the rain still falling, we reluctantly left our comfortable home for the last two nights. Tyddyn Perthi Farm B&B was faultless. The hosts were charming, cheerful and happy to help. The breakfasts were amazing, and the range of options extensive. The room was comfortable and the ensuite bathroom huge, with a traditional style roll top metal bath and large shower - both of which we made full use of. As well as getting the main things spot on, there were lots of little touches that made the stay extra special. We would have no hesitation staying here again.
As we drove closer to our destination, Caernarfon Castle, the rain continued - but was that a hint of slightly lighter cloud ahead? Indeed it was, and the rain ceased as we entered the town. As we explored the castle, the clouds melted away and we were left with beautiful blue sky.
Caernarfon Castle is the jewel of the four main castles built by Edward I. It's where his son, the future Edward II and the first non-native Prince of Wales, was born. It's also where the Investiture of the current Prince of Wales took place in 1969. The ruins are extensive with countless spiral steps to climb up and down and passages to explore. We spent a good couple of highly enjoyable hours here.
By the time we had finished it was lunch time. So we popped into an ice cream parlour opposite the castle, where all the ice cream is made on site. My Godson enjoyed a Nuttella flavoured ice cream, which he claimed was even better than Joe's in Swansea, while I tucked into a delicious Barra Brith flavour ice cream. My Godson then sampled the Haribo flavour, but declared that too sweet even for him.
Then it was time to leave for the 4 hour drive home. But we'd had a thoroughly enjoyable weekend of exploration.
