At last, after weeks of planning, my adventure has begun, and the first leg has gone smoothly. To be honest, as nothing exciting happened, which I reckon is exactly what we want when flying, this entry reflects that.
It started on a crisp, bright winter's day in London as my friend kindly gave me a lift to Heathrow. The omens were good as even the M25 was clear.
All the airport formalities were quickly completed, and my Air Singapore flight left on time.
Lunch was served immediately and consisted of braised beef with potatoes and veg, followed by malt and chocolate flake ice cream - yummy!
About 3 hours into the flight, night descended upon us and I spent most of the rest of the flight listening to music, reading or writing this. As usual on a plane for me, sleep was out of the question.
I'm now half way through Karen Maitland's The Owl Killers. Set in 1321 it's a story of fear and believe in medieval England as a group of religious women outlanders battle against the local pagan Owl Masters.
In a sign of the times, the route was somewhat different than when I last ventured in this direction 10 years aho. Then, we flew over the Ukraine and Afghanistan. Today we headed directly East into Russia before turning South East towards Pakistan and India.
A couple of hours out of Singapore, we witnessed a lovely dawn and were served a breakfast of scrambled eggs, bacon and pancake - mmmmm.
After a 12.5 hours, we arrived in Singapore and I had exactly 1 hour after docking to get onto my Melbourne flight. Did I make it? Find out in the next thrilling instalment...
