So far I've been lucky with the weather, but that all changed today as it precipitated for the whole day, and was noticeably windier than of late.
It was also time to say goodbye to the beautiful island of Arran as well as my wonderful hosts Steve and Kat, and make my way to the Kintyre Peninsular. Due to the technical difficulties currently being experienced with the Ardrossan to Brod*** crossing (apparently a truck broke both ramps) the Lochranza to Claonaig crossing was busier than usual. Nevertheless, I was there early enough on this turn up and pay service to secure a spot.
Upon arrival at Claonaig, while others turned left I headed right towards Skipness Castle. Built in the 13th century and modernised in the 16th, it is still possible to climb to the top of the tower for the fantastic views back across to Arran, albeit that today it was shrouded in mist!
I then headed south along the east coast of the peninsula, stopping at the ruins of Saddell Abbey. Also on display were the Saddell Stones, a collection of locally found carved stone, some created here where there was a school set up, and others from Iona.
I continued my journey south to the area's main town - Campbeltown. This was once the whiskey capital of the world, with 36 official distilleries! Despite poor road and rail links, its fantastic shipping connections helped the trade prosper. In its heyday, many spectacular buildings were constructed, giving it the nickname of Glasgow by the Sea. Sadly, there are now only 2 distilleries and the town is a little run down.
After popping in to the VisitScotland information office, I wandered along to the Campbeltown Heritage Centre whet I enjoyed a coffee and cake before looking around. Then I found myself in Amelia's for a cheese and bacon burger with chips and cheese.
Finally, it was time to check in to my accommodation for the next 3 nights, a lovely self-contained farmhouse annex on the west coast near Bellochantuy. I'm sure that once the weather clears the views will be great.
Today we drove 61 miles.
