After a very restful and comfortable night's sleep in the Travelodge, I checked out and made my way to The Tower of London. Arriving as it opened, I avoided the queues, both to get in and to see The Crown Jewels. It was great to get a chance to see them while it was quiet and I was able to take my time. I then spent a couple of hours wandering around the rest of the site - it's simply an amazing place to visit and there's so much to see.
I then jumped on the tube and made for Leicester Square and the TKTS booth where I bought a ticket for the matinée of Red Velvet at the Garrick, starting Adrian Lester, possibly best known for his TV role in Hustle.
I had a couple of hours to kill before the show started, so to escape the cold and wet conditions, I popped into the Angus Steakhouse in Leicester Square for a fillet steak with cheesy chips, followed by malteser cheesecake and coffee.
With an hour still to go, I looked in upon The National Portrait Gallery, opposite the Garrick, and particularly enjoyed the Tudor and Stuart galleries.
Red Velvet follows the true story of when a young black American actor takes on the role of Othello following the collapse on stage of the highly popular actor of the age. All this took place in the 1833 while there was rioting against slavery. The brilliantly written and acted play is one of the most powerful I've ever seen. Highly recommended.
Then it time to say goodbye to London and catch the coach back home, stopping off at Ed's Easy Diner, in Victoria Station, for a breakfast burger and chocolate shake, on the way to the coach station.
