Today dawned overcast and pretty windy - and stayed that way. Nevertheless, we set out to explore three castles.
Etal Castle was more of a fortified Tower House that was built to withstand the frequent attacks in an ongoing feud with neighbours from the nearby Ford Castle. However, it also played a role in the ongoing border raids with Scotland, and was briefly captured by the Scottish army before they were defeated at the Battle of Flodden. The free audio tour was both fascinating and entertaining.
Next was Bambugh Castle. Perched high on a rock right on the coast, this was a forbidding fortress. Being on the coast, the wind was much stronger here, so it was a relief to get into shelter, and enjoy a snack in the cafe, with hot chocolate to warm us up! The castle interior was amazing and the views outstanding.
The causeway now being open, we drove to Lindisfarne to visit the castle - a smaller but no less impressive version of Bamburgh, and the priory. It was no less windy here!
We then made our way home for pizza.
