Today my friend and I drove to Bristol to see Sparks.
After a lovely pizza at Stables, we made our way to the O2 Academy and secured a great view on the balcony behind the mixing desks.
The support was provided by Mr Goodnite, whose backing tracks were played on vinyl. I think he was a spoof of the kind of smooth, ladies man crooner from the 70s and 80s, but if he was it didn't come over very well.
Then it was time for Sparks. The Mael brothers were joined on stage by a fantastic 5 piece band. Ron, unbelievably 72, and the much younger Russell (69) put on a great show. Russell's voice is still in fine form as he bounced around the stage with the energy of a seven year old, and he can still sing his very fast paced lyrics. As well as classics such as Number 1 Song in Heaven, This Town Isn't Big Enough For The Both Of Us etc, they played many others from their extensive back catalogue as well as a selection from their new album, Hippopotamus. These included the title track, the musings of a harassed God in What The Hell Is It This Time and the great Edith Piaf Said It Better.
A thoroughly fantastic evening with true entertainers. I hope to see them again.
