Tonight, my friend and I ventured to the O2 Academy in Bristol to see the utterly marvellous Hot Chip.
Before the gig we popped into Stables, which specialises in pizzas and pies. It being Tuesday, we were able to take advantage of their Tuck in too Tuesday offer of a pizza, side salad and drink for a tenner. We both chose an Hawaiian pizza, which was fantastic.
We then arrived at the Academy about 20 mins before the doors opened, and joined the massive queue which consisted of 2 people. However, there was soon a crowd of 30 or so behind us, so the timing was perfect, and enabled us to grab our favourite spot.
The support was due to be Georgia, of whom I am ignorant. Unfortunately, for some reson she couldn't make it and was replaced by Pete Um, described as a "note-poet". He was accompanied by his mini disc player and performed very concise songs, most no more than a minute long. Unfortunately, in our opinion even that was too long - he was simply no good.
Nevermind, the time soon arrived when Hot Chip arrived on stage. The regular 5 memebers of Alexis Taylor, Joe Goddard, Owen Clakre, Al Doyle and Felix Martin were joined by Rob Smoughton, an early memeber who has returned for the tours and some recording, and Sarah Jones on the drums, who also played on their previous tour.
They started their set with the fantastic Huarache Lights. From then on we were royally entertained as they played songs from their latest album, Why Make Sense, and classics such as Ready For The Floor, Night and Day, One Life Stand, Over and Over and my personal favourite, Flutes. There is a lot of improvisation in their live performances which creates and exciting and vibrant show with unexpected twists. A great light show perfectly augmented the music.
Another perfect ten for Hot Chip.
