Tonight four of us, including my brother and our mother, took advantage of a lastminute.com offer which combined a meal and trip to a West End show for just £24 each.
The food portion consisted of a 1 course meal at DSTRKT, just off Leicester Square. The staff were very welcoming and accomodating, and the food very tasty. The decor was too contemporary for Mum, but at least the background music was at a volume where conversation was possible. I enjoyed a perfectly cooked rump steak with crispy fries. Mum and Bro both sampled the Seabass, which met with their approval.
Then it was just a short walk to the Theatre Royal, Haymarket to see Alan Ayckbourne's classic How The Other Half Loves, starring Jenny Seagrove and Tamzin Outhwaite. Although in the penultimate row at the back of the stalls, the view was great as the two rows immediately in front of us were empty, meaning that even tiny Mum didn't have a head in the way!
The play was written in 1969 and is, therefore, a period piece as immediately obvious from the set. However, the interaction and characterisation was a timeless display of human nature, featuring three couples as their lives became more entwined. Classic Ayckbourne.
The seats would normally have cost £40, and I'm sure each meal would easily have been in double figures, so not only was it a great night enjoyed by all 4 of us, but a fantastic bargain too!
