Today I took my Godson (GS) for his very first trip into the centre of London, at the age of 7 years and 11 months. Previously, the closest he had got was the Olympic Park in 2012!
Arriving via Victoria Station, we walked round to Buckingham Palace. Unfortunately, the Queen wasn't at home, so couldn't wave hello.
We walked through the beautiful St. James Park, my favourite of the Royal Parks, as GS wanted to see Big Ben (yes, we know that's the name of the bell, not the Clock Tower) and the Houses of Parliament.
Then we walked along the Embankment to board the River Bus, a great way of getting a first time view of London, on our way to the Tower of London. GS loved seeing the new (The Shard and The Gherkin in particular) alongside the old (St Pauls Cathedral and The Tower).
As a member of Historic Royal Palaces, we were able to get in free. We took in the Wall Walk and various exhibitions. It did rain quite hard for a while as we went round, but it didn't put us off.
We then popped into the White Tower. Built in 1080, it was the first castle that William I (the Conqueror) built after his victory. Inside was an impressive exhibition of armour. GS loved the dragon constructed out of various pieces of armour.
By this time, GS was a very tired boy, so we headed back to my Mum's via the tube and train. When we got back, we enjoyed a battered sausage and chips from the local chippie.
We also had time to play the London Game, where you have to negotiate the Undergroud, which GS won. I then introduced him to the classic Mastermind game, which he picked up quickly. Then he went to bed and slept for nearly 11 hours!
He was still tired the next morning, so we cancelled the planned trip to Windsor Castle and instead I took him straight back to his family. But he's already asking when we can go to London again!
