Tonight I boarded the tram for Fairfield Halls in Croydon for the Saint Etienne Christmas Show.
There were two support acts. First up were The Pre New, providing a combination of synthpop and punk rock, they were OK but I won't be rushing out to buy a CD.
By compete contrast, Kero Kero Bonito were next, a British band whose main influences are J-pop and video game music. They helped pump up the party atmosphere as singer Sarah bounced around the stage to their happy carefree tunes. Great for the evening but would be wearing to listen to at home.
Then it was time for Saint Etienne to take the stage. Despite it being an all seating venue, it didn't take long before everyone was on their feet as the band played a selection of their hits, including Only Love Can Break Your Heart, Nothing Can Stop Us, You're In Bad Way, He's On The Phone and, of course, I Was Born On Christmas Day, and some Christmas classics.
Sarah Cracknell was in great voice, and the 3-piece band were backed by a flutist, cello and a violist who also played guitar and trumpet!
After a 90 minute set, the band had organised a party in the foyer with guest DJs as well as themselves making an appearance. However, being an old fogey I decided not to stay long so I wouldn't miss the last tram!
Currently, this was the last show I have lined up this year. Although there's still time to fit something in, may I take this opportunity to wish my reader a Happy Christmas and fantastic 2016!
