Another gig at the Birmingham Institute entailed another trip to the Handmade Burger Company. However, to prove I'm not totally predictable, I veered from my usual order and plumped for a cheese stuffed burger topped with bacon and covered in BBQ sauce, accompanied by their handcut chips covered in pulled pork, cheese and more BBQ sauce, all washed down with an Oreo cookies milkshake. Calorifically scrumptious!
Arriving at the Institute, I was delighted to discover the support were the fantastic Stealing Sheep, a 3 piece girl band from Liverpool who I was also lucky enough to see back in June supporting Everything Everything in a pre-Glastonbury warmup in Gloucester.
Parking myself right at the front I had a great view of their 40 minute gig, consisting of material from their two albums. Their style is a mix of catchy tunes and sophisticated electronic music. A great start to the night.
Following the obligatory 30 minute break, it was time for Django Django to take to the stage. They're quite a mix. Based in London they met at Edinburgh University and consist of 4 guys, from Edinburgh, Dundee, Leeds and Derry!
Wikipedia describe them as a British art rock group, but I don't really know what that means. There is a lot of fantastic percussion in their music, combined with catchy tunes and innovative arrangements. Between them, there were 2 drum kits, one consisting of a Bells whiskey box, many percussion instruments, 5 guitars and 5 keyboards, and they were occasionally joined by a 5th guy on guitar, saxophone and clarinet. It all added up to a fantastic, energetic 90 minute set which finished bang on the 11pm curfew.
