So to begin at Wednesday...wow there is quite a bit to say, so i apologize this might be a long'un. I will also attempt to make it as cultural as possible.
Wednesday....day off due to an educational strike! We are getting so confused with all of these mid-week days off we have no idea what day it is! So a nice lie in, and no Laxmi Dai revving his engine at 5.30am...bliss....! Got up and continued our celebration of pancake day....but in style...drop scones with epic amounts of chocolate (sorry Lizzie....thanks daddy, Becks and Wendy for the supplies!) We also made another batch for the other shift of security Guards...not sure on their verdict! Had a little before work skype session with both Wendy and mumma D, which was short and sweet, and then off we headed to Ram store to meet little man (security Guard) and get our fill of 'Chang'....
When he told us to meet him at Ram Store we thought that he meant that he was going to enter the shop, buy some chang and then we would part and return to the Penthouse....but no....he actually meant that we were going on an outing (with one of his friends) to try chang...always an experience in Khumaltar, we entered a persons house where their downstairs had been converted into a kind of restaurant...so basics the size of my lounge at home...some seats, a woman with a gas hob, and a few staring customers....interesting! We sat down and they ordered us some 'chang'.....Chang made of fermented rice, and looks like skimmed milk is mildly alcoholic and tastes like gone off wine....but you kind of get into it after a few sips....they on the other hand were drinking this clear, hot liquid, very alcoholic, with floating ghee and black bits on top....very disgusting! They ordered us some chicken....and some soya beans....(wary of the chicken as the look of the place looked like it could have been called 'food poisoning cafe') we stuck to the soya beans....until it looked rude, so we demolished the chicken too! As the drinks flowed, so did little mans conversation....wow! He is Ex-Army...he worked as a para trouper and had to retire, as he was involved in a bomb blast in Yugoslavia...where 19 pieces of shrapnal hit him in his head, his wrist and his bum cheeks....he then went on to say that he was left for dead for two whole days....but then someone found him and he spent two months in hospital....he has no recollection of being found at all....an obvious language barrier, it was pretty hard to understand....he then went on to tell us that he had a gun at his house and did we want to go and try it....Rose was keen, but after the two of us discussed the realness of a gun and bullets, we decided that it was maybe time to leave....The realization of how drunk 'Little man' was hit us as he stumbled out, so with us on each shoulder we walked him home.....after of course popping into the veg shop where little man decided he needed to give the owner a good few whacks on the cheek, and repeatedly tell Rose how tall she is!....very embarrassing!
We left 'Little Man' outside Ullens as we found out from the other security Guards that Medin was in school, and headed to the penthouse....more pancakes! But i looked outside from our lookout tower, and 'Little man' had entered school...oh no! 'Hello' man later told us that 'Little man' was in a lot of trouble! Oh dear! A very eventful afternoon indeed! I must clarify that we were barely tipsy.
Thursday, a normal day....Shweta gave me a telling off as i have not yet completed all of her 30 english reports...i love being Shwetas slave....the evening we were watching a film, and in came 'Two star lookalike and Little man' Security Guards...Little man told us how sick he had been after his afternoon out with us, and how hungover he was....he was very shocked, that we weren't in the same state....they went on to describe all of the bits of the face in Nepali, and we did the same in english...fun game....we got to 'cheek' and they were in hysterical laughter....we later asked the Grade 2 teacher what it means....it is the 'F' word of Nepal....oh dear!
Friday...normal day....this time next Friday we will be finished with teaching....it will be emotional....In grade Two, Rose has this orphan called 'Roshan' he is 8. It makes me want to have a little cry when we talk about him. He has all scars on his face, and has taken to sitting with us at lunch....he is just too young to be living at an orphange...we want to know how he got the scars, and really hope that he just fell off of his bike or something....we fear that this is not the case. So in the afternoon after work after we said goodbye to Suzanne who has now officially left, we discovered that for snack it was going to be 'Momo's'!!! Chicken tooo! So number two on our list 'make momo's' would also be complete! We saw the mixture being made, and it smelt so good....unbelieviably, the chefs tasted the mixture....raw chicken....we couldn't believe it! We stood by watching them all create the momo'....they made it look so easy! A round circle of dough....mixture in the middle, and then a kind of twisty action....and done....we both tried....a complete failure, although Rose did do a pretty good one at the end. The kitchen men all had a good laugh at us....they think we are pretty mental! So momo's went down a storm, and they gave us an extra parcel for our bang up Friday night....it was great! Micheal Jordan 'maintenance man' stayed late and talked to us for sooo long in the computer room....when i say us...i mean Rose....she LOOOOOVES to chat to Micheal Jordan. So he told us that he worked in Iraq in the Army....again a language barrier....we couldn't decide if he was saying that he worked in the Laundry or Lunch in IraQ.....either way....a little awkward, Rose replied 'i guess thats better than fighting'....we then watched a hindi film from our IB friend 'Bobby' called Debanng....pretty classic rubbish, but all the same it gives us some convo with him. We later found out that 'Big ass' IT man has modelled his moustache on the main character in the film which made us giggle! WE have also been getting into our nightly drink....a hot toddy....Rum, honey and lemon....just beauty....!
We also found out today that we are going on Project week for six days....we will be going to three different villages and doing community work with the IB students....we can't wait....Rose no longer has a sleeping bag or jumper as they were sent home so we are on the lookout to borrow someones....we also have to trek for a few hours so we are hoping that our holey shoes hold out....but we are so excited!
Saturday.....first things first....WENDY, AMY!!!! Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you.....may God bless you, may God bless you, may God bless you, happy birthday to you....how old are you now, how old are you now, how old are you now, happy birthday to you.....clap....40 for Wendy....19 for Amy....
So a morning lunch date with the Security Guards....a different shift to the last date....'Little man, 2 star lookalike, 1 star, squashed egg man, and Mr creepy'....Creepy definitely sticks to the name...out we came and he was straight on with the wanting a photo with us....ahhhh word must of spread that we had a group photo with the other security Guards....so we have a scheduled photgraph with them on Monday....So they made us a great lunch, again restuarant style apart from this time we were put in the cleaning cupboard to eat not the sunshine....great food....ALOT of rice!
Then off out we went....for a birthday day trip....oh my goodness! On our way to the bus stop.....Rose got a water bomb thrown at her!!!! Everyone is preparing for Holi Festival and thats what happens apparently...! Very funny! So we planned to pop to Thamel to book our bus, cinema, and then supps....1,200 rupees each...12 pounds...spent ona bus to India....its going to be an epic journey...so its official we leave on a night bus from Nepal on 30th March....it is going to be a little emotional! Went to our usual travel people....and they recognised us! Had a giggle and some Nepali tea and then went on our way.....suprisingly today, we talked to two white people!! One when we had a beer in a bar....where we also saw an epically huge wasp....so we trapped it in a cup as neither of us had an epipen on us!! IT WAS HUGE! Sadly it then died....i was very sad...but apparently we had suffocated it....so sorry waspy....! We lso gave directions to some one!!! We really are locals i tell you! Onwards to the cinema.....its in a big shopping centre, and there is a HUGE screen that had the cricket on....on each floor of the shopping centre there was just a big crowd watching the cricket!! They LOVE it! All of the cheers....so that, and then when the adverts come on, its back to staring at the white girls....yes us! Watched 'No Strings Attched' in english......a classic, so good! And then headed (on one of the most squashed buses ever) to Jhamsikel....our new favouite place since mumma and pappa came....it has all of the posh restuarants! We had a mohito each! and then after carefully counting the monies, we shared a starter, main, and pudding!! Mental! Got a taxi home, and headed to bed.....GREAT DAY!
Tomorrow another day in the kitchens with our boys!
