Today it was back to the tennis for the Finals of The Finals. As it was a later start today, my hosts graciously cooked a scrummy roast dinner.
First up was the doubles final, contested by the number one seeds, Lukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo, and the number two seeds and defending champions Henri Kontinen and John Peers - the makings of a fascinating encounter.
In a very entertaining match lasting 1 hour and 10 mins, Kontinen and Peers were very impressive and hardly put a foot wrong. Despite playing well, their opponents couldn't keep up so the number two seeds successfully held on to the title, winning 6-4, 6-2.
Then followed a fantastic singles final between David Goffin and Grigor Dimitrov. Four days earlier, when they played in the round robin stage, Goffin only won 2 games. Today was to be different.
The first two games lasted 10 minutes as Goffin broke Dimitrov's serve only to lose his own serve. However, Goffin broke again and looked to be in control until Dimitrov broke back again to level at 4-4. The momentum was now with the Bulgarian as he took the first set 7-5 on his 5th set point.
The second set proved to be tighter, but Goffin made the decisive break to go 4-3 up and he served out the set to take it 6-4.
Dimitrov had to save 4 break points in the first game of the deciding set. He then broke Goffin to lead 4-2. With Goffin serving at 2-5 and 0-40 it looked to be all over, but he managed to win the next 5 points to force Dimitrov to serve for the championship. The Belgian saved one more championship point before Dimitrov secured the victory.
Not only was it a thrilling match that lasted for 2 hours and 30 mins, but it was packed full of amazing shots from both players. A fitting season finale.
So that's the end of that. All that remains now is for me to catch the coach home tomorrow.
