The third, final and decisive day of the Davis Cup tie. A change to the lineup meant that instead of having Istomin, who after two hard matches had had to pull out, Cameron will play Sanjar Fayziev.
Serving first, Cameron started off nervously and lost his serve. However, he settled down, broke straight back and held to go 2-1 up. Cameron broke again but then faced a couple of break points on his serve, which he saved. It took a few more game points before he secured a 4-1 lead. Cameron continued to apply pressure with several more break chances, but Fayziev showed his mettle to hold. Cameron then held to love for 5-2, and broke again to bag the first set.
Cameron kept the pressure up at the start of the second but failed to gain an immediate break. However, in the 4th game he underlined his superiority by breaking to love. Then in the 7th game Cameron showed his fighting qualities as he came from 0-40 down, saving a total of 5 break points to quell the Uzbek resistance. In the next game he broke to love again to take the second set.
A break in the second game of the third set surely meant the tie was secured? Any lingering doubts vanished with a second break in the 4th game. Another break in the 6th game saw the set, match and tie secured 6-2 6-2 6-0!
After Friday's disappointing match, it was very satisfying to see Cameron perform to his ability, showing how he has reached the heights of World No. 70 within 18 months of turning professional.
The dead rubber want played, so that was the end of this tie... and the end of a Davis Cup era. The change of format means there will only be one home or away you're each year, in February. I love the current format, the joys (and disappointments) experienced over the years will stay with me forever. I've yet to be convinced by the new format, but it's going to happen so let's see how it goes.
After catching the bus back in to town, as it's my last day in Glasgow I revisited The Blue Lagoon, having a totally different meal from yesterday (Black Pudding instead of Haggis). Then headed back to base for a relaxing evening.
