This evening, I was joined by a friend to see the fantastic OMD play two of their classic albums (Dazzleshps & Architecture and Morality) at the stunning Royal Albert Hall. However, I first took the opportunity to explore!
The trickiest part of the day was getting my car to Kensington, handy for getting away after the show. This being London, the 9.5 mile journey took 90 minutes!
Courtesy of my brother, I was lucky enough to be given a tour of the MOD Main Building in Whitehall, in particular King Henry VIII's Wine Cellar, which is only open to staff and official visitors - a real privilege.
The Main Building stands on the site of Henry VIII's Whitehall Palace, most of which was destroyed by fire in 1698 when a maid, drying linen using coals, disobeyed the scrict order not leave it unattended. The linen caught fire, followed by the tapestries and then the whole palace complex. The only structures to survive were Banqueting House, Holbein Gate and the Wine Cellar.
When constructing the Main Building, the cellar had to be moved. So, they lifted it on rails, moved it across, dug a huge hole, moved it back and lowered it into the hole.
Following a lunch with my brother, and booking a couple of future theatre trips for Mum and I, I made my way back to Banqueting House only to discover it was closed for the afternoon. D'oh! Should've checked the website properly!
Nevermind. I headed to Kensington, home of the Royal Albert Hall, to wander through Kensington Gardens, stopping off to admire the stunning Albert Memorial, and made my way to Kensington Palace.
Although still home to Royalty, notably the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, some of the Palace is open to the public, including the stunning King's Apartments and Queen's Apartments. This was also the childhood home of Queen Victoria.
By the time i exited the Palace, the blue sky had been replaced with threatening looking clouds. I contemplated heading for one of the museums but instead decided to look at The Serpentine. However, the heavens opened and by the time my friend and I met up, we were both thoroughly soaked!
We popped into the Albert Hall's coffee shop where I enjoyed a pre-show, massively thick and yummy sausage roll.
The show itself was fantastic as OMD were on top form. The 50 minute first half consisted of the whole Dazzleships album plus three from their first eponomous release. The 1 hour second half was devoted to Architecture and Morality followed by a three song encore.
If I was told I could watch one group live for the rest of my live, it would have to be OMD.
The we faced the 95 mile journey home. Although ten times further than this morning's, it took just 2 hours.
