Last Thursday, a friend and I were pondering whether to go and see the comedian Rob Newman at the Cheltenham Town Hall. Well, that very evening I received an email offering 2 tickets for the price of 1. Not wishing to fly in the face of destiny, we duly bought our tickets for the whopping price of £9 each, including fees!
The event took place in the Town Hall's Pillar Room. A room which has several pillars holding up the ceiling, and where the seats are unreserved. When there is an event in the main hall, this room acts as the bar. We arrived early enough to secure good seats and our overly watered down Diet Cokes.
For the uninitiated, Rob Newman was formerly one quarter of The Mary Whitehouse Experience with David Baddiel, Steve Punt and Hugh Dennis, and he was the final piece of the jigsaw in my quest to see all 4 of them (actually, there never was a quest, but now I've managed it I can claim there was).
The 2 hour show was a witty and fun challenge of the modern quest (there it is again) to map the human brain, questioning whether it is the best was to understand the brain. Once the function of part of a brain has been discovered, and medical science develops ways of enhancing or surpressing that part, are we fundamentally changing what makes us human?
Newman tackled a serious subject in a humourous and entertaining manner. A great show.
