I forgot to add to yesterday's post. Yesterday morning before our lesson, one of the guys that works here asked me for a hand. We went down the beach and he showed me a live turtle had been washed up! The 2 of us and another local we recruited carried this huge turtle back down to the sea, and it just swam off. During our surf later on I saw a turtle swimming around, so im hoping it was the one we saved.. (Pictures on my camera)
Last night was strange but absolutely wild! After dinner I went in Wifi for a while and then got back to academy house about 8pm. By then all the drinking games for Ross's birthday were in full swing. Despite not intending to drink I 'got involved' and it was a really good laugh.
Everything went a bit tame by 9:30ish so I watched a film with Linda and Charlie. At the end Dan came in half drunk and persuaded me to get back on it, rather than go to bed.
We were drinking of the balcony when Lasse and all the rest of academy (who weren't in bed) came back from the camp fire. Long story short, Lasse decided he was going to let Ross cut his hair, as a birthday present. This resulted in his hair going from nearly hip length, to shoulder length. Due to everyone shouting, screaming and cheering the people who were in bed all got up to watch the spectacle.
When this was over I was getting a coffee with Paul and he was telling me about jokes his mates do at home when drunk. One of these was to put trafic cones on high objects. This got us thinking, and Paul went and found a cone. He then proceeded to climb right to the very very top of a 50-60ft tree and put the cone on the top like a an angel on a Christmas tree!
Very proud of ourselves we celebrated by BBQing 4 fish burgers and a couple of burgers as a 2am snack. Pretty tired after an eventful night we all went to bed drunk.
This morning Paul woke me up at 7am really excited as people had seen the cone and the story was going round camp. All morning the banter from last night has been absolutely Awsome!
I went out for a surf after all the stories at breakfast - it was 2-3ft and glassy, with right handers breaking perfectly just like a reef break! I surfed for about 45 minutes and got some really really nice waves.
I got out the sea to watch all the video footage from yesterday's surf, which was pretty good, then went back out surfing on my lesson. The surf has died off a little but i was still stoked after a sick short session before.
The second session took us pretty much up to lunch, so we just had lunch and chilled after. I also practised some of the instructor talk stuff for tomorrow.
We were meant to have fitness at 3:30pm but as everyone is tired from a crazy weekend Rhys let us off. Instead of fitness Ross and I were sat in the surf school when Linton turned up thinking he was meant to be teaching us theory. Instead Ross and I convinced him to take us to a different surf spot, as Arrawarra was crap. We grabbed our boards and snuck out of camp before any one else saw us.
We went and surfed a beach called 'Shellys', which turns out to be the best beach I have surfed in Australia - the surf a solid 5ft with some 6ft set. But the waves were completely different, they were breaking in wedgey peaks, with steep barreling take offs and really fast walls breaking down the sand bank. I had such a fun session, absolutely frothing to be able to surf epic waves. We also got to see how impressive Linton is in good waves, pulling airs and doing huge turns.
We got back to camp at 6pm for dinner after seeing the most amazing sunset at Shellys.
Ross and I were super excited to tell everyone about the epic waves we had scored, only for the others to have a better story..
About 5-6 of the academy went over to surf Mulawarra, which was apparently quite good. Half way through their session they were all sat chatting out back, when one of them saw a fin. After staying still and looking around they then saw a big shark fin again just cruising in a straight line though the water. Apparently the girls were screaming and freaking out but fortunately they all got to the beach safely..
Everyone is just chilling out this evening and going over some of the stuff for tomorrows assessment. I'm going to go to bed early and try and get a good sleep for a change.
(The tree paul climbed all the way to the top of and put the cone in..)
