What such a not-so-nice morning to wake up to; very overcast, and wet from last nights rain.. I had a pretty good sleep and woke up about 6am with the light as usual, but outside was just grey and horrible. Even the surf hadn't managed to clean up over night, despite there being no wind. There was a lot of swell around, but the beach just wasn't making anything useable of it. Instead I just led in bed and read my book for a while, then got up, had breakfast and sorted the car out.
The river ferry back to the main didn't start until 8am, so I had some time to kill until I could get back over, then go and look for a surfable beach.
Once I had got back over the river I went round and checked Town Beach. Despite being much more sheltered the swell had died off significantly from yesterday, and it was tiny. I carried on driving round the coastal road along the top of the cliff, until I came to the last break in the town it's self, 'Lighthouse Beach'. From right up on the headland you could see the swell was getting into the beach, but it was just a stormy mess and just unsurfable.
Disappointed I wouldn't get to surf any of Port Macquarie, I got the SatNav out and headed south. It was an hour and a half to the next good spot in my book, 'Saltwater Beach'. This turned out to be just south of a small and pretty isolated coastal town called 'Old Bar'.
Down here the beaches were making a little bit more of the swell, but the tide was super high making the waves pretty fat. Having talked to some locals who figured it would get significantly better as the tide dropped out a bit, I sat on the beach and read my book for a little while.
Sure enough as the tide dropped a 3ft wedge style left started working quite well off the rocks, so I got in as quickly as I could. I had got into some really fun ones, but it's sods law; just as the surf was building, hurricane force winds picked up and just blew it to smithereens. After just an hour or so you just had to get out.
It was lunch time by then, so I had the standard Peanut Butter sarnies and a banana for lunch, then found myself a comfy spot of grass in the sun and read my book for almost the entire afternoon. I only started reading it about 3 days ago, and now I've finished it, good job I got 2!
I also did the short walk up to the Headland where the lookout point was. It really was blowing a gale up there, but on a calm day there would have been a brilliant view!
Other than wandering around on the beach a bit and having some dinner not much else went down, for the rest of the day..
