Last night was the best sleep I have had for ages, with only the odd waking up I spelt from about 8pm till 7am. However I paid for it in Mosquito bites, the little b*****s got me about 10 times.
I went on to have a very interesting early morning. I got talking to my neighbours in the motorhome again over breakfast, who were actually here to pick up a Grandson. He was living in 'Commune' just up the valley from the campsite, and offered if I wanted to come along when they went to get him. I figured it would be pretty interesting to see a commune in real life (rather than just on TV) and took them up on their offer. Plus I could go for a ride in their extremely luxurious motor home.
It was definitely an experience thats for sure! I took as many photos as seemed acceptable, but they were basically squatting with permission, in a dilapidated small house. They were the standard bearded and slightly BO smelling hippy people, but obviously loved what they were doing, living off the land. There is absolutely no way I could do it, but each to their own.
What did make me laugh was the Grandparents, who were clearly well educated a wealthy, doing their best to be accepting of that 'lifestyle'..
Anyway they dropped me back at the camp an hour or so later, then headed off back home down to Sydney. I packed up the car and said a quick goodbye to the other bloke I had spoken to yesterday, before heading off too.
It was about a 2 and a half hour drive to Crescent Head from where I was, and it's fair to say all my perceptions of travelling have been changed. At home that is a long drive, here you don't even think twice and just go..
This time however I had been going about an hour, before I came across a Macca's. Eager to use the Internet again, I pulled in and spent what turned out to be about an hour on the web.
I updated my blog so that people at home who were interested could see what I'm doing, replied to WhatsApp message from mates, and facebooked..just the usual.
Having been thinking to my self as I was driving along, I realised I had got over the worst of my sadness for leaving Spot X, again. It was probably helped by the fact I have been texting Lorraine and I realised that nothing really 'happens' there; unless a brilliant swell comes along, you can stay a week or a month and other than the standard enjoying time with your friends, not a huge amount goes on.. On that realisation I was glad I had left when I had, as at least I am seeing more of the country and meeting different kinds of people. Having said that, seeing the photos on Facebook of Halloween night it did look like brilliant fun!
I arrived in the town of Crescent Head just after lunch, and parked right next to the well known point break at the southern end of the main beach. As seems to be my luck with the famous breaks, it was almost flat and being ripped up by a strong North East wind..perfect! As a town Crezzo has very little to offer, and having walked about and taken some photos down by the beach, I got back in the car.
Having asked for directions at the local petrol station, I headed 10/15km south to get to the exact same campsite I had first visited with Mojo about 8 months ago! I remembered from the bus journey last time the road was 'rough' once you left the town..but apparently I didn't remember how rough.
A couple of Km out of the town the tarmac just stops, and the gravel road begins. What really made me laugh were the road signs; 'This road is generally unsuitable for speeds in excess of 60km/h' and 'Fauna Crossing Slow Down'. A) I know the road was mainly used by 4X4's, but I could do no more than 25km/h for the risk of loosing my teeth, or shaking the car apart! B) just as I was laughing at the second sign, and how little I would be able to run over at 25km/h, there was a tortoise right in the middle of the road! As I hadn't even seem another car, I got out and took some silly photos of me pratting around with a tortoise, before putting him at the side of the road, incase someone did magically get up enough speed to squash him.
I decided to actually stay at the camp site where I had been before, as pitching up in the middle of nowhere on the side of the road seemed ridiculous. Plus it was only $15 for a hot shower etc.
Having set up where ever I pleased in the virtually deserted campsite, I went for a bit of an explore. I walked around the area used by Mojo, which was extremely wierd as it was almost exactly the same as 8 months ago, yet my situation couldn't have been more different.
I then went over the road and onto the dunes above the beach we had surfed last time I was here. One of the only other residents of the campsite, a bloke in his 70s(?) was sat on the bench watching the 'surf'. Sure enough he was a surfer too, and I sat chatting to him about the area+waves in general for ages. I found out lots of interesting things, but one was a bit scarier than the others; there is a resident 12/15ft Tiger Shark who swims between the beach we were looking at, and the headland about 2/3km south all the time, as it's his territory. Not only that but in the month the old fella had been living at the camp and surfing that beach, he had seen it numerous times. Apparently 'it's not very interested in you, just checks you out a bit, but it's a bit worrying when it gets between you and the beach'. I BET IT IS WHEN YOUR SURFING ON YOUR OWN EVERYDAY! Fingers crossed he won't be around for a few days.
Other than walking around on the beach and looking through some rocks pools it was an uneventful late afternoon. I came back to the camp about 6pm when I was hungry to make some dinner (tuna, unions, mushrooms, garlic, 'mixed veg' and 2 minute noodles. Spot on!), then went to bed about 8pm when it was dark.
