Today was a day of travelling as I said farewell to Orkney. The weather for the day was a mix of sunshine and showers. There were some heavy showers but I luckily got there after they'd finished, and I only had a couple of light showers.
The first leg was on the MV Earl Thorfinn ferry from Rapness on Westray to Kirkwall on Orkney Mainland. On route I saw some seals as we passed the island of Shapinsay.
From Kirkwall I drove over the 4 Churchill Barriers to St. Margaret's Hope to catch the MV Pentalina to Gills Bay on the Scottish Mainland.
From there, I took the 40 mile A897 over the mountains to Helmsdale on the east coast, with the roof down all the way. Here I popped into The Thyme and Plaice Coffee House and Restaurant, where I had a lovely Cheese and Bacon Burger with Hand Cut Chips, and a Deluxe Hot Chocolate.
From here I continued my journey to Nairn, a few miles east of Inverness.
During my 12 highly enjoyable days in Orkney, I set foot on 12 islands. In order, they were:
South Ronaldsay
Burray
Glimps Holm
Lamb Holm
Mainland
The Brough of Birsay
Hoy
Rousay
Egilsay
Wyre
Westray
Papa Westray
Orkney is a fantastic place with fascinating history and friendly people - well worth a visit and I will have to return to explore the islands I missed.
Today, we drove 180 miles.
