A Herbert's Travels
Today, my Godson and I explored a couple of Roman Villas.
We started at Chedworth. One of the largest villas found in Britain, it was built from the second to fourth centuries. It consisted of an elegant set of buildings around three sides of a courtyard. Discovered by a GameKeeper in 1864, today the remains of the West Wing are on display under the cover of a building to protect the fine examples of mosaic floors. The hypocaust heating system can be clearly seen, and the bath houses. The foundations of the North Wing can also bee seen. Today, there were many extra events on, of which my companion took full advantage. He made his own mosaic, a medicine bad and tiny Roman pot, before we saw a fascinating demonstration of roman pottery. Then we made a quick visit to the remains of Great Witcombe Roman Villa. Much less impressive than Chedworth, with just the foundations on show in the middle of a field. Nevertheless, we had great fun running around and playing games. Built in the first century and occupied until the 5th, the villa in its heyday would've been very impressive. Built on a hill, it was constructed over 4 terraces.- comments
