Thursday 20th November 2008 (the avid readers among you might notice that there is no entry for Wednesday, but nothing much happened so here is Thursday's insight to life in NZ)
We were back at the medical centre again for Part II of the tests and to get our results from Tuesday. The doctor called us in together and I sat patiently while she spoke to Mel and went through her results. You will be as pleased to know as she was that everything is functioning correctly liver, kidneys, blood count etc. And you will also be pleased to hear that she has neither syphillis nor HIV which after being married 11 years was a relief for me too!!!
Her BMI (there is that word again) was in order and blood pressure fine and she had a heartbeat.
We then swapped places and it was my turn, again everyting was well in the functioning department and I didnt have any life threatening diseases so this was good news.
Now over the years I have been called lots of awful things, partly due to having ginger hair and the other half from Mel,but I wasn't prepared for what I was about to hear today,as I sat and listened to the doctor tell me my BMI was 3 points too high (not a lot I can hear you all thinking) and I would need to lose 1 1/2 stone to get to my ideal weight because at the minute i was OBESE,yes OBESE now I have always realised I was a bit overweight but never the O word.
She then told me my diet was all wrong and I was eating too late at night without me even telling her any information so I decided that the doctors here must be psychic too.I sat quietly and took it all in,all the time thinking I have paid 140 quid to be insulted.I could have done it for the price of a pint with my mates in the pub, for gods sake!!!
We did get to keep our x-rays though,we are getting a nice collection and soon Mel will probably have her whole body on x-ray for us to frame...
I left the building feeling quite annoyed but sure this BMI thing is trying to fit everyone into a box, then I got thinking maybe I am too big or what if I don't lose weight will my head explode or will people be walking down the street saying "There goes fatty, and he has ginger hair!!"
I think the last time I weighed my ideal weight (12st 9lb) i was about 14 years old.Back at the house it was lettuce for lunch and a glass of water and a good look in the mirror to see what I had turned into.
Turns out the doctor was wrong and I am happy as I am and no bloody BMI index chart is changing it so I will just spend the rest of my days waddling around.
Got to go as it's time for a swim in the sea if the tide is in,and maybe a biscuit later with my cup of tea.
Lots of love
M & Big Fat M
