BEIJING CITY, Beijing Province:
We got back into Beijing about 7.30am, after an OK sleep on the train. I was sharing a cabin with Andrew, Rob and another guy, who me and Andrew kept thinking was groaning, until we realised it was just the train's engine!
We walked from the station to Beijing Zoo. I'd heard loads about how it was a really depressing zoo, but I think because I was expecting it to be appalling, it wasn't quite as bad as expected. The reptile house was actually really good, the majority of the animals looked pretty healthy and it was fairly clean.
The horses, zebras and goats and stuff were OK, not much to their exhibits, but they had a good amount of space. The elephants, rhinos and giraffes were pretty grotty, but the big cats were the worst. Lions and tigers, mainly on their own, in small, dirty cages, with barely anything between them and us! They all looked skinny and depressed. Not nice.
The panda exhibit had obviously had a lot of money put into it, but it wasn't as great as I thought it was. None of the pandas were very active, I might try going to the zoo later on in the year to see if they're a bit more lively in the spring time. They were very cute though!
In the evening we had a big family meal at the hotel, to celebrate New Years' Eve!
