HUAIROU, Beijing Province:
Korean School today! Unfortunately, the school has yet again changed the syllabus, and the students now have to memorise a play!
I think it's really stupid, because surely an improvisation would be so good for their English and developing fluency... to memorise something you don't have to know what it means!
Anyway, because Efren was only told about this change late last night he still had stuff to sort out, so he asked me to take over his class (that he normally shares with Sarah) for this week. I really hope it's just for this week!!
Sarah came up to the office after her lessons with the group... seeing her face did not improve my mood! She has to get her students to memorise dialogues, and to be fair, it is so boring... But her students really played up this week - at one point she was locked out of the classroom!
The classes went OK for me... but her students are little b******s! They don't listen, they play with their mp3 players, they talk to each other loudly in Korean! Nothing like my normal class. Out of the 10 students, 8 of them are in my classes in the Chinese school.. and they often cause trouble in them too, so it's not just because it's a saturday morning!
There was a couple of them really playing up - I had to resort to using Supernanny's Naughty Chair technique on Coca - he kept hitting Justin in the face with a rolled up piece of paper (the dialogues he was supposed to be reading...), and it wasn't til eating lunch later when I saw the funny side of putting an 18-year-old on a 'naughty chair'!
In the evening we watched a film and shared a bottle of red wine... very civilised!
