HUAIROU, Beijing Province:
Got up early for our mandarin lesson, only to realise that we both had missed calls from Emily. When we got hold of her she told us the mandarin lesson had been cancelled coz she had to prepare for an observed lesson she has tomorrow.
She also told us the school wanted to invite me, Sarah and my family to dinner, for Christmas, but also because a previous foreign teacher was visiting Huairou. I told her that my family were in Beijing until tomorrow, so she said she'd try to rearrange the dinner.
We got our nails done - I got pink sparkly nail varnish! And then I headed over to the Korean Department to prepare for Saturday morning - they're having a competition to test the students of all the things they've been memorizing this semester. Connie asked if my brother will do a dance or a song on stage! Found the image of Andrew prancing around on stage hilarious, but told her that he wouldn't as he's very shy...
At 5.15, Emily rang and said that dinner would be at 5.30pm. Which I said was great - 'for tomorrow, right?'... Stupid thought really!
Managed to get hold of Sarah, and after serious testing of my Chinese skills, I managed to let Kate know that our lesson would be later.
The dinner was really fun, as well as Emily (Miss Cao), there was Flor - a guy from Germany who taught at Huairou No. 1 Middle School for a year between 2006-2007, and his Chinese girlfriend - Celia, Mrs Liu (the Dean), Mrs Liu (the head of English), Mr Guan (another Grade 1 English teacher, who teaches my Class 2) and Mr Mang (the Dean's assistant).
Our lesson with Kate was only an hour this evening, and afterwards we met Flor and Celia who took us to a coffee shop that he'd gone to regulalry when he lived here. It's amazing - it's a western style bar, with spirits and everything!!! Just no other customers.. haha
Flor and Celia left after one drink as they had an early morning, but me and Sarah stayed until 3am, savouring some of the spirits we've been missing these last few months!
On the way out we were given VIP cards... so I think we'll definately be going back there!
