HUAIROU, Beijing Province:
Friday! Woooop
Had only two lessons to do today, they went ok... not great, but the kids mainly did what I asked.
Hardly slept at all last night, I was not comfy! Was woken up constantly by the bloody a/c... Woke up in a really bad mood!
Spoke to Miss Cao, we're not going to be moving into an apartment for another week! Apparently the other place we were going to move into was not very nice, and they've found us another much nicer place. Although it's bad news that we've gotta stay in this scabby hotel for another week, it's actually encouraging that they're looking out for us.
I told her again about the air conditioning and she seemed quite shocked that it hadn't been fixed. I asked if she'd help us move rooms, and she agreed to meet us at the hotel after she'd finished teaching.
We had a nice lunch of oniony bread and sprite! Was quite nice actually, the bread needed something - a nice slab of mature cheddar probs!
So anyway, we moved rooms with Miss Cao's help - our room now is so much nicer! It's laminate wooden flooring instead of carpet, so it looks much cleaner and there's way more space! Plus, the air conditioning doesn't drip! Luxury!
We got ready to go out, and with help from Miss Cao's writing we made it to 'Bar Street' - not quite what we were expecting! The taxi driver tried to rip us off, but we paid him 10rmb, rather than the 20 he asked for! Still think that was too expensive, but I didn't wanna push it. Would've paid him the whole 20 if Sarah hadn't argued!
Bar street was... interesting! The first thing we saw as we rounded the corner was a spotlit red Nissan Micra with a big bow on it's bonnet! Random...
There was about 1 1/2 bars on so-called 'bar street' and there was a very specific film set feel to it.. We went to the only place that looked open for a beer, then decided to try out 'Disco 9', an optimistically-named building that looked almost as sorry as the bar we were sat at. Once inside though, it was amazing!!
When we got in, loads of people came over - we felt like local celebs, it was really weird!
Sophie, who introduced herself as the club owner's sister, asked us to sit with her and her friends. We were given beer and some whisky and juice, then a singer came on stage, and after that a magician..
It was such a bizarre night, but it was brilliant!
Off to Beijing tomorrow!
