Sam and Stu's Kiwi Travels
Right early morning again and off to the Remarkables for Sam's second day of snowboarding. After yesterdays success I knew it wouldn't be long before we were able to get up the sugarbowl chairlift and try some different runs.
The day didn't start off too smoothly though as we got to the Kingsgate Hotel at 8:14, but it turned out that we had already missed the bus!! After waiting around for 10 minutes we headed into town to catch the next bus from the station, a bonus to this is that we get the tickets from the station for $15 rather than $20 on the bus! $5 for our troubles.
Once we got there we saw on a sign that there is actually an express bus from the station to the Remarks at 9:00! Excellent we jumped on and we were off! We got to the base station at 9:50, great timing considering the next bus from the Kingsgate was at 9:45 and would have got us up here by 11!! The weather was once again amazing! not a cloud in the sky!
We stored our gear and headed for the learner slope so that Sam could get a few practise runs in before heading up the first chairlift of the day!!She was looking pretty good on the beginer slope so it wasn't long before we were up to the proper runs.
The first run down she was turning onto her Toe edge smoothly, but was having a little trouble on her heal, too much weight on her back leg bringing the board round too far, after a few more turns this was quickly rectified and she was on her way down the slope like a pro!
After a couple more runs it was time for me to leave Sam for a little bit and head up the sugarbowl chair for a run as I hadn't hit the slopes for a while, and I'd fallen over a couple of times coming down with Sam and was getting worried that I was loosing it :o)!
The snow wasn't too bad today, nice little bit of powder at the top of the runs, but the blue coming through under the chairlift was pretty much sheet ice!! We need more snow!!
I headed down to meet Sam at the bottom of the chairlift and do a couple more runs before heading in for lunch. I can't believe how quickly Sam has picked up snowboarding, she's managing to link a few turns, which is a lot more than can be said of some of the other learners!!
Anyway, we headed into the base station for lunch, unfortunately today we were unable to get a table outside, but we munched lunched and were out again in no time!
Right back up to the top of the run... Sam is having a little trouble with the whole getting off of the chairlift so we have to go up just the two of us, but she is getting better, it's now just the stopping before carrearing into the mound of snow infront of the get-off point!
We headed down the slope again, Sam had a few little falls in the afternoon, but her wrist guards have saved her on a number of occasions... another good day on the slopes!!
We headed back to the flat on the 4:30 shuttle and for once settled in for the evening, it was great! The only problem was the electricity bill laying on the mat as we cam in... a little expensive for the time billed, but nothing we can't sort out...
