Sam and Stu's Kiwi Travels
Today we decided to have a change of scenery and headed up to the Remarkables ski area... Well a slightly longer bus drive awaited us as we once again woke incredibly early to make the 8:15 shuttle, heading in the other direction....
Well the journey up there is worth a story in itself, the road leading to the ski area is a windy road up the side of the mountain with no barriers at the side and a shear drop for a view! But what a view though, well at least we were told it was but to be honest we couldn't see much of it today as it was very cloudy.
Luckily for us once we got to the ski area we were above the cloud and it was turning out to be a very nice day. We headed up the first smaller chair lift and boarded/skied to the second lift that takes you a little further up the mountain... well once we got up there I'd found what I'd been looking for... some powder to test my board out properly. It had snowed the night before and a fresh covering was all over the mountain, within minutes Sam and I were carving fresh tracks through the snow with no one else on the slopes, it was the best skiing we'd had since we'd got here.
Well we were back up the chairlift like a shot, we must have put in 5/6 runs before stopping for air, or our legs gave way, either way it was time to stop for a bite to eat. Down to the bar, and cookies and powerade were the order of the day!
Back to the slopes and I was learning to 360 on my board (on the ground, not jumping just yet!!) and Sam was bombing down the mountain off piste, all in all having a great day... by 2:30 it was time to head back down to Queenstown as we wanted to be there for this weeks issue of The Mountain Scene... (this is the free magazine we need to get to find the accomodation in QTown)
Well, another result here... we got back to the hotel by 4, and lying on the reception desk was a copy of The Mountain Scene, an hour before it's out for the rest of Qtown!! Right to the hotel room and we were on the phone to the only flat for rent this week!!.. no answer... we headed into town to buy a sim card to give them a number to call back, trying again Sam got through, we had a viewing at 5!!
We took a wonder up to Earnslaw Terrace... a five minute walk from the Copthorne Hotel, and 10mins from Town, and met up with Adrian, the Land Lady of the property, and she showed us round. Well, to say it was exactly what we were looking for is an understatement!!! It had a large living room with kitchenette area, a nice size bedroom with en suite and a washing machine (much needed after living out of a suitcase for 2 weeks!). They are also fitting a new heating unit and stove! well of course we took it, and now we have our flat sorted for our time in Queenstown!!! lovely job!
We headed off back to the hotel like two cats who'd got the cream!! Once we got back we decided to celebrate with a hot tub, and relax for the evening!
