Siguer - Refuge de Clarans- Tarascon
Blauer Himmel, tolle Route.
Today I walked 18.7 km on the trail with 1657 m height gain and 1297 m height loss. Since I arrived nearly 2h before my pickup at the street, I waked another 5 km downhill the road, because it was boring to wait and being bitten by mosquitos.
It was an almost perfect day concerning scenery and weather. Even my feet /shoes did a good job and I managed the first day in new boots without blisters. These are actually amazing shoes- I not even feel very tired after a 9 h hike.
The only problem I had was concerning technology: my phone shut off after few hours and left me without camera and the GPS controlled " topo maps" App. At certain point I severely lost my way.
It was during a downhill part, when I arrived at a little hut. There was a GR10 marker painted on the hut with a faded arrow indicating the direction. Only, when following the arrow, - there was no further trail. I tried all directions. No trails, no signs. I checked the book and map and was not even sure where I was. I recalibrated the altimeter of my GPS watch. At least, I knew know where I was: Cabane de Balledreyt. The book described it as a ruin, but in fact, as I walked inside, I saw that it was well maintained offering sleeping and cooking facilities for hikers. It looked cosy. I considered to just stay here, but that would not solve the problem in the long term. So, I was reading the guide carefully and after having my lunch, followed exactly all instructions: "follow the path (not visible) from the cabin SE, in 100 m turn right SSW, then left, SE, and finally SSW though some reeds to pass though rocks".
It really worked. I found the GR10 signs again and everything else was a piece of cake.
Altogether, this day was beautiful, but extremely lonely. Apart of some cows, one squirrel, some wild horses, a very orange butterfly, and one good looking shepherd, I met no one. Not a single hiker! It seems to be here like a big hole on the GR10, that many hikers skip due to the difficult accommodation situation.
Well, I liked it:-)

Henning RTFM! ;-) Auweia, son Technik-Trouble gleich am Anfang. Wasn da los? Ein Hoch auf die Redundanz!
Daimon Walker Excellent to be reading your trail journal again. My morning commute into the grey rainy city is brighter for it. Also good to read the "old ways" of navigation are still useful. Sounds a perfect day.
