Tag 8, Mounicou
Arrived, after a 9 h hike, in this lovely gite at Mounicou. As mentioned above, this was the most beautiful day of the entire trail (it's probably not the first time I am saying this). Gorgeous views, sapphire blue lakes, majestic mountains, sunny weather with a bit of a wind to chill the skin. Well, I must admit, I am a bit sunburned. I also got lost twice today which has cost me an extra hour or 4 km plus, respectively. Doesn't matter. It was all my fault. I also took an extraordinary long lunch break - the view was just so awesome, it can't be described .
The last hour of the hike was on top of an old aqueduct. That was weird because although it was going through mountains and forests, the trail was like a paved road floating over the landscape. A bit like the yellow street in the "Wizard of Oz" . The gite in Mounicou is quite special. They don't provide meals, but did the groceries for the individual guest so that everybody can cook for themselves. Of course, this is very communicative. We are 8 people altogether:4 Icelanders, 2 French, and two Germans. I cooked pasta with vegetable-tomato sauce together with the two French guys- apparently they know even less about cooking than I do. I expected more from the French cuisine- but at least they organized the wine.
There was a lot of talk about how Iceland played in the European Championship this year.
The German guy (Johannes) walked the GR10 from the other direction, but now he gave up, because his partner has left him. Instead he is now planning to hike next year the Appalachian Trail, the year after the PCT, and afterwards another 5 months hike through the Rockies ( he forgot the name of this trail). I am not sure, if I can believe all that (considering that he gave up so early in the Pyrenees ).
Anyway- always interesting species these hikers.
