So schön!

This was the most beautiful hike one can imagine. What a scenery! And wonderful weather! Days like today are the reason for accepting much discomfort (blisters, back pain, snoring people in the gites..)
It all started with walking the "Chemin de la Mâture"; a unique trail of about one km length and 2m wide constructed in the 18th century to transport wood from the high mountains to the valley. The wood was needed for war ships - to fight England. But the trail is a huge master piece of engineering art: It is basically cut into a vertical wall of several hundred meter height. It looks very impressing.
After hiking along the abyss, the trail continued through lonely but lovely woods and grassy areas going up to 2195 m. At the summit I had a breathtaking view at the Pic du Midi du Oiseau - one of the most famous mountains of the Pyrenees.
Apart from that also the geology proved to be very interesting today. Instead of the so far observed sedimentary rocks (mainly limestone), at the upper regions of the mountains a reddish volcanic rock dominated now. Sometimes also as colorful breccia or associated with very beautiful, crystalline, white quartzite veins.
I couldn't resist and took a piece as souvenir.
