Arles-sur-Tech
The morning in the chalet-hot started with a beautiful sunrise (photo) and a great walk with wonderful scenery staying at high elevation (2100-1700m) until the Mines de Batère. In these ancient mines they used to mine iron since centuries (the celts and the romans, and the modern French of course). I think, I saw quite some hematite in the rocks on my way, which is probably the source of iron.
Actually, I should mention something about the geology of the Pyrenees. It's quite exciting and diverse. But not now, because I want to focus on the downhill part of the hike.
The long descent down to the city Arles (282m) within about 4h in the afternoon was interesting in terms of climate and botany change. While walking down it was getting warmer (from 12 to 28) and Vegetation changed from high alpine grassland with few pines to jungle-like wet areas thickly covered with farn, birches, and bushes to deciduous woodland with oaks, chestnut, and beeches. Finally it became Mediterranean with olive trees and agaves.
Fascinating- like a walk though the greenhouses of a botany garden.
This evening in a real hotel was most enjoyable. Eating a la carte, just by myself- and now into a warm bed.

Daimon Walker The end is nigh! What a lot of experience s for one day of hiking. Such variations in temperature, botany, and seemingly wildlife all coupled with a stunning sunrise and a linen bed. I'm sure it is arduous on the feet but it sounds incredibly nourishing for the soul.
